2024 was another good year in the garden. The annuals in the big pots spread wonderfully – or, at least, the ones with enough sun did – I had to move some shaded ones around a bit. The honey locus in the back throws a bigger shadow every year! The roses had another spectacular year, especially the Peace rose – the one that was “this close” to a trip to the yard waste – that’s done really well and has people stopping to admire it as they walk by.
Our hydrangeas hardly bloomed for the last 2-3 years but this year they put on a splendid show, which I attribute to some benign neglect. It always looks like the previous year’s stalks are mostly dead, and in previous years I’ve waited a few weeks and then cut them back to a live offshoot. This year I steeled myself and didn’t touch them at all.
Finally, out on the public pathway, the yellow whatcha-ma-callits (that’s a technical term) that our neighbour donated are spreading nicely and trying to take over the spot the spiderwort is in.
