While I was trying for the perfect “bird in flight” photo I made a discovery. One of the technical difficulties in bird photography is that it’s practically impossible to predict exactly where a bird will be in the next second. Now, while it’s only a bit easier guessing when a squirrel will jump ON to the bird feeder, there’s a really easy way to predict when a squirrel will jump OFF the bird feeder. All you have to do is stamp on the deck, and the squirrel jumps. Now I imagine the squirrels would quickly get conditioned to stamping, and I may have to modify the procedure somewhat, but meanwhile I have my flying squirrel shots, so I don’t have to traumatize them any further. They shouldn’t be eating the bird seed anyway. but they are so darned cute.
The first two are actually the same flight, taken fractions of a second apart. The other may be the same squirrel, but it was a week earlier.
